Ronaldinho / The game played with a smile

R10 The shirts that carried joy.

A selected 1999—2015 journey through the colours, numbers and moments that turned Ronaldinho into football’s universal memory of joy.

The archive thesis / Joy leaves a trace

One career.
Ten selected files.

Ronaldinho’s story cannot be separated from the colours around it. Blue, black and white carried the beginning. Paris made the tricks travel. Brazil colours made them global. The Barça No. 10 became a symbol of possibility. Red and black, Flamengo hoops and Atlético stripes proved the feeling could move without disappearing.

This is a selected career shirt tribute spanning 1999—2015—not a claim to every club, kit or match. Official and credited archive frames preserve the pivotal moments; owned product photography shows the stocked designs linked to each chapter, with their relationship to each moment clearly disclosed.

Querétaro and Fluminense close the 2014—15 career timeline. They remain outside these ten files until a correctly matched shirt enters the archive.

Ten chapters / Read in order

A career,
shirt by shirt.

Ten selected chapters connect official club and competition archives to the correct-era shirts in stock. The 1999 Grêmio final remains an editorial moment; the adjacent 1997 and 2000 designs are clearly separated below and available to shop.

20 June 1999. A teenager in Grêmio stripes decided the state final, then dribbled past Brazil captain Dunga twice.

    File 01 / Grêmio / 1999—2001

    The day Porto Alegre knew.

In the deciding match of the 1999 Gauchão, 19-year-old Ronaldinho scored the only goal as Grêmio beat Internacional 1–0. More than 40,000 people were inside the Olímpico; by full time, the blue, black and white No. 10 had become the story.

Open the Gre-Nal shirt note +

He nutmegged Anderson in the move for the goal, then produced two famous dribbles against Dunga—the captain who had lifted the World Cup five years earlier. The shirt mattered because this was not potential anymore. It was a teenager taking over one of Brazil’s fiercest rivalries.

Nigeria, April 1999. The official frame catches the No. 7 whose youth-tournament run opened the door to senior Brazil.

    File 02 / Brazil / 1999

    The first Brazil magic.

At the World Youth Championship in Nigeria, the 19-year-old scored three times at the tournament. Months later, wearing Brazil’s 1998 home design during its 1999 run, he lifted the ball over a defender and scored his first senior international goal against Venezuela at the Copa América.

    Why this shirt mattered +

The youth run, Brazil’s Copa América triumph and six goals at the Confederations Cup made one calendar year feel like a time-lapse. Ronaldinho was not part of Brazil’s 1998 World Cup squad; this design belongs here because he wore it during his 1999 senior breakthrough.

    File 03 / Paris Saint-Germain / 2001—03

    Paris made the tricks travel.

Across two seasons in Paris, Ronaldinho turned the Parc des Princes and the Vélodrome into stages. The 2001/02 home shirt framed his European arrival; the 2002/03 home shirt carried the Marseille masterclass that turned a fierce away fixture into an R10 reel.

    Why this shirt mattered +

PSG later returned the 2001/02 home design to its official heritage line. On 9 March 2003, Ronaldinho scored with a delicate finish and then drove the move for PSG’s third in a 3–0 win at Marseille. Both season families below were genuinely worn during his Paris spell.

England quarter-final. No. 11, the blue away shirt and one free-kick that still refuses a simple explanation.

    File 04 / Brazil / World Cup 2002

The blue away shirt carried the impossible.

Wearing No. 11 in Brazil’s blue away shirt against England in the quarter-final, Ronaldinho carried the ball through midfield and released Rivaldo for Brazil’s equaliser. Then came the free-kick from distance that dropped beyond David Seaman and became one of the tournament’s defining images.

    Why this shirt mattered +

Brazil went on to win its fifth World Cup. That blue shirt held the entire R10 proposition at once: creation, risk and a moment nobody could quite explain away.

Twenty-five thousand came to meet the smile.

Ronaldinho was presented at Camp Nou on 21 July 2003 in front of 25,000 supporters. The new No. 10 did not need long to give the shirt its first impossible memory.

Open the midnight shirt note +

Against Sevilla on 3 September 2003, in a league match that kicked off at five past midnight, he drove forward and struck in the 58th minute. The ball crashed in off the underside of the bar: his first official Barça goal, already built like folklore.

    Why this shirt mattered +

The image matters beyond the score. The established No. 10 had created the first goal for the player who would inherit the shirt years later. Barcelona won La Liga that season; Ronaldinho received the Ballon d’Or in 2005.

    Why this shirt mattered +

AC Milan’s official record lists 95 appearances and 26 goals. The 2008/09 home belongs to the derby winner, the 2009/10 home to the Siena hat-trick, and the 2010/11 home to Ronaldinho’s final months before his January 2011 departure—not the entire title run.

JPOz is an independent retailer and cultural archive. This selected 1999—2015 tribute does not claim to document every club, shirt or match and does not imply affiliation with, endorsement by or sponsorship from Ronaldinho, any club, federation, league or tournament. Official and credited archive previews link to their named source and remain the property of their respective owners. Product cards use JPOz-owned catalogue photography; descriptions identify whether each shirt is a documented match design, a same-season alternate or a clearly disclosed related print.
